2.5 out of 5 stars Steve Loewy, All Music Guide
Recorded less than three months before the great tenor saxophonist's death from liver cancer, these duets with bassist Dominic Duval reflect the indomitable spirit of a musical titan. Performing while ill, his powerful will overcame otherwise insurmountable obstacles. Spearman is not quite in peak form, and his energy level seems understandably diminished. Still, there is plenty of fine blowing throughout, while Duval subordinates himself respectfully. The music is perhaps more lyrical, less outrageous, and a touch more disconnected than usual, yet considering the pain the saxophonist suffered, the results are remarkably good. Duvall and Spearman each perform a solo number, in addition to the ten duos. While there are better examples for Spearman's playing, fans of the late saxophonist will want to own this one.
