Although he is chiefly remembered for his romantic ballads and carefully chosen pop and R&B covers, Jamaican soul singer Alton Ellis is also a fine songwriter, and his most memorable and enduring moments are wise and socially conscious originals like "Cry Tough," "The Preacher," and "My Time Is the Right Time," all of which are included on this single-disc collection of mostly Duke Reid-produced Treasure Isle releases recorded between 1966 and 1971. Also included here is Ellis' remake of Chuck Jackson's "Willow Tree (as "My Willow Tree"), which gains in poignancy in the retelling.
