This fine album of instrumental dub sounds remarkably organic for having been produced by only two musicians, both of them credited with drum programming and keyboards as well as the occasional guitar and varied percussion. Usually that sort of arrangement leads to sterile, synthetic-sounding dub in which the various instrumental parts sound more like plastic cutouts than the real thing, and the dubwise echoes, fades, and drop-ins sound calculated and cheesy. These tunes, however, while not entirely free of those qualities, mostly have the warmth and spontaneity of the best old-school dub. The album's title is a reference to a great reggae organist who composed some of the music's more enduring instrumental tunes, and Joseph I and Fazal Prendergast deliver respectful but still creative versions of some of those tunes here. Highlights include the funereal Hammond organ sound on "Pacific Dub" and the clavinet-driven "Gemini Dub," which shifts slyly back and forth between major and minor keys.
