Extraditional is Kojiro Umezaki's first CD, on which he presents us with modern pieces for shakuhachi and electronic instruments. Two of the pieces includes two conventional instruments as well: guitar and vibraphone. Umezaki is a composer and computer scientist specializing in audio technology. His main interest is to use real-time interactive music system on stage while performing on his shakuhachi, thus altering the sound of the instrument as well as creating particular and unusual electro-acoustic sound structures. He indicates that his music is based on spatial motion that can be best heard in a hall, and of which we can have only a glimpse on the CD. This is an eclectic type of music. Although traditional Japanese honkyoku music influences his writing, he departs from most shakuhachi musicians who remains faithful to the Japanese traditions.
