Some artists are prolific, and there are others that listeners might wish were more so, just so that there would be a larger number of their documents around to peruse. Harkey inhabited a musical world of her own within the Lower East Side, New York City, scene of the '80s, sadly producing only a handful of albums before heading back out West. As the album title and even the name of the label announces, you are in the presence of a special thinker who knows how to use the language. This is not music for listeners wanting something light; it is perhaps too somber or serious at times, but the effect of such talented people striving for something so significant is not to be denied. As with all Harkey projects there are top-notch players involved with what she is doing, and she has a superb way of blending them totally into her approach. A striking feature of the record is how a different group of musicians, usually utilizing unique and uncommon instruments, appears on practically every track, with none of the players or sounds repeated!
