Summerfling was the first single released from k.d. lang's Invincible Summer, and highlighted an ongoing frustration in lang's career -- no matter how good the music, and no matter that her singles are actually released domestically -- it's still not enough to permit lang to score an actual hit. lang has released several singles since her pop breakthrough, Constant Craving, and not a single one has been able to crack the U.S. charts. "Summerfling" is just about as free-spirited, breezy, and summery as a song can be -- and possesses all the qualities that big hits are made of. The original version is a lush delight, and the remixes manage to stand on their own two feet. Victor Calderone was enlisted as a remixer, and his fast-paced, techno-trance-electronica version recalls his earlier remix of Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger." Wamdue's remix is mellower than Calderone's, with beats more reminiscent of deep house, and is one of those recordings that sounds just as good either in a nightclub or relaxing at home. The third remix is Ananda's "Sweet Bird of Summer" mix, which comes complete with acoustic guitars, and is a little airier than the other two. An instrumental of the Calderone mix is also thrown in, as well as dubs of the other two versions, and, to close the single, the gorgeous album version. This is the type of seminal recording that, since it was never a hit upon initial release, deserves to be rediscovered by a music supervisor and used in a film -- it's that good, and it's a true shame that something as timeless and lovely as this ditty can't muster enough muscle to dent the U.S. pop charts. ~ Jose F.
