2.5 out of 5 stars John Bush, All Music Guide
On Rescate 137, his debut for NovaMute, Cristian Vogel pushes his formula for experimental techno into overdrive with the help of new random-generating software and sampled percussion. The second track "Whipaspank" is the best, with a ghostly funk vocal scatting over twisted native effects from bongos to fretless bass. Creaking analog basslines push "Esquina Del Sol" and "La Isla Piscola" into highlight territory as well, the latter with another insane vocal performance from Vogel's samplers. Most Cristian Vogel LPs never venture too far from his (admittedly far-out) production style, and this one's no different; by the time the beatbox track "Wind From Nowhere" kicks in halfway through the album, it sounds more like a breath of fresh air than a brief pit stop. Still, Vogel takes his place next to Herbert, Si Begg, and Two Lone Swordsmen as the artists that screw up the techno formula most.
