Formed during Britain's great ska revival craze of the early '80s, The Selecter were, perhaps, the best of the bunch. Led by lead singer Pauline Black's strong and energetic vocals, the band specialized in speeding up classic Jamaican rocksteady tunes into ska territory, then driving them home with some of the funkiest rhythms this side of Kingston. Their only real hit is the opener here, "Too Much Pressure," but their brand of driving manic energy makes anything they tackle fly right off the table, including covers here of Toots Hibbert's "Pressure Drop," Desmond Dekker's "007 (Shanty Town)," Justin Hinds' "Carry Go Bring Come," and Leonard Dillon and The Ethiopians' "The Whip."
