Their second proper release (not counting their excellent foray into holiday music), the Orchid Pool continue to refine their toyshop folk-pop on Chutes and Ladders. The duo of Kim and Tony Paglia again come with 30-some odd interests in tow, making space for the contribution of each in their soft-colored pop collage. However many-sided their approach is, the sleek and economic sound of acoustic guitars, flutes, cellos, and accordions makes for a decidedly floral collection of instruments. Having since pulled up Pennsylvania roots and relocated to Athens, GA, (a likely end destination given their ideological and aesthetic ties to the Elephant 6 community), good-natured escapism and light-hearted pop bliss never fail to deliver their charms. Still, even though they may share headspace with the experimental/psychedelic pop community, the Paglia's muse still refuses to submit to easy classification, as Tony Paglia can approach a near singer-songwriter sensibility when not indulging in complex pop structures. As such, we are presented with big flowing melodies ("In the Sun"), merry piano tunes ("Chutes and Ladders", and wide-eyed playfulness ("Chicken Plays With Toys."
