India: Swinging Hits (Hindi Film Tunes on Electric Guitar) by
Sunil Ganguly!
Critic's Review
Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
The esteemed Sunil Ganguly, who shares the same name as a much more famous and treasured Bengali poet and novelist, is nonetheless well loved by a devoted coterie of followers who treasure each note he plays on either electric guitar or pedal steel. He has a sound that seems only achievable if one planted one's electric guitar in the middle of a stream, and hit notes by casting at it with a fishing rod and reel. Nobody quite has his sense of time, which sometimes gives the impression he didn't mean to skip one of the notes, but what the heck. Devotees of this guy have to be able to wade through the Indian film music milieu, in which ingrediants as diverse as claves, brass bands, wah-wah funk, and sitar imitations on synthesizer (or is it there other way around?) can all occur within the first three measures of a tune. Sometimes the guitarist lays out, perhaps enjoying a bite to eat, while a string section comes in and plays horrible drivel, but perfectly in tune. There is information about which films these tunes originated from, and who produced them, but no credits for composers. Perhaps they want to remain incognito. All the studio musicians who jump through hoops here also remain uncredited. This is one of dozens of similar albums the guitarist has put out.
