The Whole Hog hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland, a fine traditional locale for Celtic music, and their debut EP, Folk It Up, from MP3.com, offers both instrumental and vocal selections. "Rattlin' Bog" has some cheerful whistle and banjo playing, and "Mouth of Tobique" is a merry, bouncy number, with almost a string band sound; very lively. "Star of Munster" starts out rather sedately, but wait until they pick up the tempo midway through -- then it lilts along merrily and toe tappingly. Interestingly enough, though, the song that is the most ear catching on this collection is their version of the modern song "Past the Point of Rescue," an engaging mix of vocals, guitar, flute, and percussion that brings in the rock side of their performances.
