Store's music sits on the fence between sound-event-oriented electronic music (glitch, experimental techno) and melodic, accessible, more commercial electronica. Unlike other artists in a similar situation, Store is comfortable in this position and so are his listeners. Autopilot unmistakably belongs to the Austrian electronica sound. References to Fennesz and labelmate B. Fleischmann are in order. At times, the music stays overtly, almost perversely melodious ("Roedelieske I" and "Roedelieske II"), at others it is relegated to a more subversive role, altered by chance manipulations and buried by the glitch track that provides a beat of sorts. The lightness of Fleischmann's Pop Loops for Breakfast occasionally trades places with the dreaminess found in Biosphere's music. The short-song format also enhances the listener's impression that this music is (or should be) easy. But under its inconspicuous guises, it challenges the ear, especially during the longer tracks, like the 14-minute "Off Land." "Nomad" and the eerie, insisting "Rancho Tranquilo (Relaxista)" provide the other highlights. The use of cheap synthesizers and sounds derived from old electronic games adds to the sympathy factor while evoking Klangstabil. Marcus Sterz (the man behind the moniker Store) does not bring new ideas to the table with this CD, but he sure learned his lessons well and managed to make something pretty and relevant out of them. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide [-] Collapse
