The husky wail of Latin favorite Ruth Fernandez was in prime form on Yo Soy la Que Soy, an excellent album that features help from La Orquesta Pan Americana de Lito Pena. Although her previous material was more based in ballads and sadder material, here she tries applying her melancholy croon to up-tempo material. She succeeds, which is no surprise to anyone familiar with her previous output, but certain aspects of her personality are left behind in favor of this other direction. Mainly, she was really great at ballads and could put some heavy emphasis behind them, so there aren't any gripping slow songs here like on Es de Borinquen.
