Eva Taylor gained some fame in the 1920s when, as pianist-leader Clarence Williams' wife, she appeared on hundreds of records. Her clear enunciation, pleasing voice and lightly swinging style was always an asset. After the mid-'30s, she was rarely heard on records (a broadcast from 1947 was largely the end of her career) until after Williams' death in 1965. She made a few obscure recordings during the next decade including this LP when she was 81, one year before her death. Taylor's voice was much lower at that point in time than it had been 50 years earlier and was almost unrecognizable except for the smile in her voice and her phrasing. Taylor is joined by Maggie's Blue Five, a top group of Swedish traditionalists including the Louis Armstrong-inspired trumpeter Bent Persson and Tomas Ornberg on soprano and clarinet. Taylor revives ten of the songs that she recorded in the 1920s including "I Found a New Baby," "Papa De-Da-Da," "Cake Walkin' Babies from Home" and the sweet if dated "Are They Pickin' on Your Baby."
