Critic's Review

3.0 out of 5 stars Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
Michael Nesmith's skill as a songwriter was apparent even during his stint with the Monkees, and his work as a solo artist showed a musician with a clear sense of what he wanted to do, and the patience and commitment to do it, even if it wasn't exactly commercially viable. This import collection has a generous selection of Nesmith's work with the First National Band, some work credited to the Second National Band, and includes the near-hits "Joanne," and "I've Just Begun To Care (Propinquity)," the original version of "Different Drum" (a hit for the Stone Poneys featuring a very young Linda Ronstadt), and an interesting version of the Hank Cochran/Harlan Howard gem, "I Fall To Pieces." Nesmith's intelligent lyrics and droll delivery make him an important figure in the rise of country-rock.
