Such is the plethora of compilations dedicated exclusively to Bob Marley & the Wailers' recordings with Lee "Scratch" Perry that many fans may now be tempted to ignore them all in disgust. Most of the sets deserve this disdain -- so frequently has this material been recycled that even the most casual fans of this period inevitably have most of it in their collections already. Which makes Soul Adventurer such a treat, for this set actually brings some rarer numbers to the table. Among the 20 tracks within are a group of alternate versions, and with the Upsetter at the controls, that ensures there's something fresh to be found, alongside a couple of dubs to shake up the rafters. But the real finds are U-Roy's DJ version of "Trench Town Rock" appended to the Wailers' original vocal cut, and a quartet of extended "discomix" versions of four of the band's 45s. And although this material can now be found on multi-disc sets, this is one of the few single-disc compilations available that allows fans to cheaply check out this more unique material.
