Three O'Clock in the Morning is Bert Kaempfert's follow-up to his enormously successful album Blue Midnight from earlier the same year. The title track, a popular tune from the '20s, fared well as a single. Contemporary listeners have a hard time making sense of the orchestral pop of artists like Kaempfert, whose forte is the lost art of arranging. As rock & roll gained predominance with its all-at-once approach to instrumentation, most of the popular audience lost its appreciation for the arrangements of orchestral pop, and today this music is usually dismissed as Muzak. Kaempfert was a fine composer of melodies, and Three O'Clock in the Morning has several pieces he wrote or co-wrote.
