At first look, this album from the German noise label Gender-less Kibbutz is just another three-way split CD. In fact, it is an upward spiral. You start in the abysmal darkness of harsh noise and gradually lift up to the quiet, spacy stratosphere of experimental ambient electronica. First up are the Haters, the main solo project from Survival Research Laboratories' sound terrorist, GX Jupitter-Larsen. His two tracks (a total of 25 minutes) are painful slabs of merciless noise and it is not certain if the title "Death Defying Sickness" should not take a hyphen between death and defying -- it would suitably describe the physical reactions one experiences. Still residing in noise territory, Mr. Natural is more textural than harsh. Unlike the Haters' feedback-ridden sounds, the music of this project often seems to originate from over-amplified vinyl surface noise. But the treat on this CD is the last half hour, completely devoted to Italy's Bassifondi Orchestra. The seven untitled tracks take you on a mesmerizing journey of crystalline tones, backward swooshes, and what sounds like bowed metal. The music of sound sculptors Chas Smith and Peter Warren comes to mind. Uncanny voices and a slight menacing atmosphere nurture a relationship with what came before, but the contrast is nevertheless striking -- and highly effective.
