Critic's Review

4.5 out of 5 stars John Bush, All Music Guide
As common as mix albums became, in virtually every style of dance music, Danny Tenaglia's double-disc Choice set still filled a very important gap: the R&B/pop end of New York City club music of the '80s and early '90s. Wisely skipping over the biggest, most familiar hits, Tenaglia dug deep into his crate to resurrect some great tracks, made all the better by the master's selections and transitions. Though both discs are packed with rare tracks, nearly all come from the greatest producers, remixers, and vocalists of the era, from Larry Levan's mix of "Changes" by Imagination to an uncredited Robert Owens vocal on "As One" by Jus' Friends to an Eric Kupper mix of the deep house classic "Whistle Song" by Frankie Knuckles. Tenaglia creates the warmest vibes midway through the first disc, led by the monotone "I Believe" by Designer Loops (aka Fierce Ruling Diva) and the bleep diva track "(I Wanna Give You) Devotion" by Nomad. Choice is not only a collection of classics, but a mix that's perfectly evocative of its intended time.
