Sandpaper is a rough object that, when applied to other rough objects, makes them smooth. 40 Grit is a rough band that, when applying itself to rough material, makes it smooth. The Concord, CA, crew might have cut its teeth on old-school metal; however, the band's sophomore disc, Nothing to Remember, shows that more modern fare was a big influence as well, as the bulk of the disc tempers the aggression of Sevendust with an infusion of melody not unlike Disturbed. The almost glossy production and catchy songs make the disc ready-made for the rock radio around the time of its release, with drums and vocals leading the sound, yet unlike some who come off as pandering, 40 Grit's enthusiasm helps the group seem genuine.
