Liquid Plumber rescued themselves from near-obscurity in 1999 with And the Dangerous Mike Walsh. An overwhelming multimedia release that centered itself around the notion that superheros live among us in places we least expect them to, things kick off with "Dangerous Theme," which easily brings to mind classic Pixies tunes and sets the stage for a plethora of characters and dreams that reside in lead singer Mikey Piontek's mind. It's an unbelievably enjoyable listen, but nowhere do the true colors of the band shine through more than with "When the Lighthouse Dims." A slight nod of the cap to Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips, it's a tender ballad built around a nihilistic view of the end of the world, and in turn the end of deeply rooted relationships. An impressive final bow, And the Dangerous Mike Walsh is a bittersweet farewell to a group who could have easily been placed in the upper echelon of alternative rock if given just a little more of a critical and commercial push. The CD comes with an entire bonus section comprised of their first album and selections from their first two EPs in mp3 format, several Quicktime music videos, live performances, photos, reviews, interactive games, and dozens of hidden Easter eggs that reward close attention to detail and re-listening experiences.
