One of St-Onge's most enigmatic and captivating solo albums, Kasi Naigo "is an assay written around and based on the silent moments in Ingmar Bergman's film Tystnaden (The Silence)," the composer explains in a very brief liner note. Bergman's '60s motion picture is a gloomy tale of repressed sexuality between two sisters. Its presence is hardly ever felt on the album, except in the second piece where sighs from a lovemaking scene make their way into the aural soundscape (now, Alexandre, that's not exactly silent, is it?). Otherwise, it's all closing doors, creaky floors, and passing cars. But beyond these incidental sounds heard during silent moments, the film makes itself heard through the heavy tape hiss and muffled ambience, as if listeners were hearing the movie coming from a television set playing loudly at the other end of the house. To this basic layer (which in fact is probably made of more than one layer), St-Onge adds various undecipherable sounds that exist somewhere between the realms of digital glitch and household objects. By now you probably understand that listening to Kasi Naigo is a highly unusual experience. Reality becomes blurry: What is the movie, what is a home-made field recording, what is studio manipulation? The empty silence of "...4'33"..."
