If you listen to Moving Through casually or while being distracted by something else, you'll think it doesn't move through much. Pay more attention and you will be sucked into its ever-changing microcosm. This collaboration between Matt Borghi (treated guitar), Brannan Lane (synth, treatments), and Jason Sloan (keyboards, piano, loops, and voices) reaches a higher density than the latter's Still CD (released around the same time). Less focused on the shimmering beauty of a soundscape, Moving Through dives right into the troubled waters of the drone. What it means is that the sounds are not exclusively ethereal and pure (i.e., "new age"), but descend into a more visceral state of flux that borders on quiet noise. Yet the music remains surprisingly comfortable and pleasant. The album consists of a single 70-minute piece, recorded in three different American states, the artists adding in turn to the music of the previous ones. The result displays a strong sense of cohesion. It may lack a bit of personality (compared to, say, Aidan Baker's ambient soundscapes, immediately recognizable as his own), but it makes an immersive listen nonetheless.
