The Dogs' first new material in nearly a quarter-century -- and their first proper album ever! -- sounds so close to their '70s-vintage stuff that one might assume at first that Suburban Nightmare consists of previously unreleased outtakes and demos. No new influences seem to have crept their way into the Dogs' music in the intervening 24 years: it's still all MC5, Stooges, Mick Farren & the Deviants, Rocket from the Tombs, and the other late-'60s/early-'70s proto-punks all the time. (The album even closes with a salute to the Dogs' forebears, the anthemic "Class of 1970.") As always, Loren Molinare sings the songs -- mostly by himself with help from bassist Mary Kay and drummer Ron Wood -- with more enthusiasm than skill, and always, technical ability is utterly beside the point on songs with titles like "Intergalactic Slut" and "Everything Is Cool."
