If Sergio Mendes and Burt Bacharach took over Steely Dan and became Austin Powers' house band it would sound a whole lot like Corduroy. No doubt that Corduroy have their shirts professionally laundered, but it's more than likely they iron their jeans, too. There's hardly any irony in Corduroy's retroriffic style and there's not much soul, either. That said, they do what they do with flair and always come up with infectious melodies. "10:28 from Shibuya" is a good example, with its inescapable "ba ba bu da" hook, but there are about ten other top-notch numbers to choose from here. Bongos and horns get added to the mix once in a while and the guitars are lightly fuzzed, but none of it disrupts the band's sunny and groovy sound. The collection samples the band's albums well enough -- with special attention given to their debut -- and some B-sides are included. Anyone interested in the band can choose between the two-disc collection London, England or this more concise overview.
