The Obsessed/Sodden Jackal EP by

Alternately known by the band's name or as the Sodden Jackal EP, this three-song disc was the only official recording of Maryland metal icons the Obsessed before vocalist/guitarist Scott "Wino" Weinrich skipped town to join Saint Vitus (he would, of course, resurrect the band almost ten years later). And piss-poor sound quality aside, its three cuts -- highlighted by the one-minute, punk rock burst "Indestroy," and title track itself -- are perfectly representative of Wino's high quality work. Just as important, the band also display a rougher but recognizable imprint common to all of Wino's future groups: echoed vocals, riff-heavy garage-metal, and dazzlingly fluid guitar solo runs. And although it is now nearly impossible to find in its original pressings, this EP was later included in the late-'90s "odds & sods" release Incarnate.
