Released in Europe in 2001 but not seeing the light in the U.S. until nearly three years later (unfortunately coinciding with the band's breakup), the first full-length album by Dutch indie rockers Oil follows four years' worth of singles and compilation appearances that saw the young band evolve from straight-up hardcore to a post-Fugazi band more than capable of broadening their artistic scope while retaining the immediacy of their earlier sound. Songs like the echoing dub-psychedelia of "Ten Days in the House of the Pharaoh" and the bratty new wave-ish whine of "Let's Don't and Say We Did" fit well against the more traditional thrash of the opening "Kill the Project," giving Definition Delta a wider than average stylistic palette. Even the straight hardcore songs, like the terrific "I've Got the Feeling Something Bad Is Going to Happen," are uncommonly catchy, with spiky guitar riffs and Nicholas van den Doel's better than average vocal hooks.
