The look of Split Enz was as important as the music the band produced (especially in the eccentric early years), so a translation to video is no great stretch; despite the lack of an outlet for videos, the band embraced the medium early on, producing clips for most of their singles, as well as album cuts. History Never Repeats (later retitled and reissued as 1972-1992 to coincide with the career retrospective box sets) collects essentially all of the promo clips the band filmed, from the obscure early days to the MTV-embraced new wave-era videos for which they're best known. By today's standards, many of the videos may seem primitive, but as a document of the band's development and ever-changing look (as well as a document of the times), this collection is invaluable and an essential addition to any fan's collection.
