Critic's Review

4.5 out of 5 stars Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
Robyn Hitchcock recorded Eye, his fourth proper solo album, after the disappointing Queen Elvis. Eye marked a return to the acoustic-oriented folk-pop of I Often Dream of Trains, featuring a collection of his most personal songs. Where I Often Dream of Trains was a kaleidoscopic journey through a colorfully twisted world, Eye sounds more confessional, although Hitchcock's exact lyrical sentiments can be difficult to sort out through his dense and willfully obscure imagery. Nevertheless, the immediacy of the music -- which is delivered on acoustic guitars and piano -- and the simple, delicate grace of Hitchcock's melodies make even the most cryptic lines sound direct and straightforward.
