Cybersonik

Though short-lived, this collaboration between Richie Hawtin, Dan Bell, and John Acquaviva brought instant recognition to the trio's recently birthed Plus 8 label and influenced legions of producers around the world with "Technarachy." This song in particular left a mark on many at the time of its release in 1990, functioning as one of the first clear-cut hardcore techno anthems. The song's metallic clinking sounds, 909 drum kicks, and the gargantuan riff may seem like simple ingredients in 2000, yet this sparse arrangement wielded substantial power, particularly back in the early '90s, predating similar anthems such as Joey Beltram's timeless "Energy Flash." A few other Cybersonik records -- Backlash, Trash, and Machine Gun -- followed on both Plus 8 and Hawtin's experimental techno label Probe, with each getting increasingly abrasive to the point where they went almost too far, extending beyond techno into the near-parody cacophony of gabber. Despite the ridiculous industrial heavy metal sounds of the latter records, "Technarachy" remains a vital track, reappearing on the Plus 8 Classics: 1990 - 1992 collection. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
