A Band of Angels

A Band of Angels put out four singles from 1964-1966 without making much of an impact, and are known exclusively for featuring pianist/singer Mike d'Abo, who in mid-1966 replaced Paul Jones as Manfred Mann's lead vocalist. Their singles, mainly written by d'Abo, weren't bad, though they weren't stylistically consistent. "Me," a near-gem of overlooked British Invasion R&B-pop, sounded like a cross between the Pretty Things and early Small Faces; its B-side, "Not True As Yet," was like a more Merseybeat-inclined Dave Clark Five; their cover of Neil Sedaka's "She'll Never Be You" sounded like Gerry & the Pacemakers; and "Too Late My Love" was waltzing orchestral pop/rock. Six of the eight tracks from the singles are included on the compilation The Mike d'Abo Collection, Vol. 1: Handbags & Gladrags, though sadly that's missing two of their songs, "Leave It to Me" and "Cheat and Lie." ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
