Alex Morgan
The song "Deadwater," written by Alex Morgan and Doug Fesler, was described as a "hip selection" in a review of a CD by Lucky Tomblin. Only one sort of person would claim to have heard of all three of these people, let alone claim they were hip, and that would be a resident of Austin whose taste in country & western runs so far underground that they have to bang on the ceiling to wake the gophers up. "Hip" is actually a totally suitable word in reference to Tomblin, whose band includes stellar country sidemen such as pianist Earl Poole Ball, steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar, and lead guitarist Redd Volkaert of Merle Haggard fame, all of whom are featured on bandleader Tomblin's interpretation of "Deadwater."
Morgan's co-writer on a song perfectly suitable to the repertoire of a self-professed Western swing band is not the same Doug Fesler who is considered an expert on avalanches and has written several books on the subject. The idea of being completely buried under an avalanche is one of the least likely images that comes to mind when searching for solo recordings involving either Fesler or Morgan. An Alex Morgan who actually never existed is obviously much better known than the "Deadwater" poet, that being an alias used by singer Jack Grisham on the first recording by T.S.O.L. Fesler does play out on the Austin country scene, thus at least providing a live stage and subsequent set list to present the collaborations of this songwriting team. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
