ZeeDeevel's Album Review for Watch Out!
""
Alexisonfire's sophomore release shows the band finding more of a melodic approach to their music rather than all out hardcore. The music is still abrasive, but now in a better mixture with harmony, and the disc is an improvement as a result.
2003’s Watch Out!, the sophomore follow-up to Alexisonfire’s self-titled debut would come to display the band’s talent in a bigger picture, surpassing the hype built from the debut. Whereas the band’s debut gave voice to guitarist/vocalist Dallas Green’s melancholy breach in the usual harsh metal/emo style, Watch Out! expands on that successful discovery, giving Green more time in the sun. The album’s opener, “Accidents” is a prime example, and it sets a tone and pace for the rest of the disc. “Control”, the disc’s second track allows Green to sing more than a chorus or hook, which suits the band’s instrumental style perfectly. Alexisonfire’s use of metallic riffs and a melodic mixture to them sets them above the rest of their peers within the genre, and likens them more to metal-kin than any other. As the disc progresses it’s easier to tell how much tighter the production value is on Watch Out! in comparison to the band’s earlier work. There is a sense of maturity with all the tracks that leaves Alexisonfire looking like a promising talent. “Side Walk When She Walks” is a good example of the band’s evolution, filling the more abrasive instrumentals with melodic, softer passages; notably Green fronts the song in its entirety. It’s hard to find a song that isn’t catchy at one point of listening on the record, and the closer “Happiness By the Kilowatt” is a brilliant way to wrap up good music.
