This 16-song CD (the final track is a mock interview) is the most comprehensive collection to feature music from the late-'50s and 1960s {\novelty} phenomenon the {$Chipmunks}. The name was <i>not</i> a derivative of the popularity of {$the Beatles}, but rather a suggestion from the kids of multi-media mastermind {$Ross Bagdasarian}, whose rodent-related moniker dated back to his 1958 hit solo platter {&"Witch Doctor."} The names of the primary characters, {%Alvin}, {%Simon}, and {%Theodore}, were a nod to {@Liberty Records} higher-ups {$Al Bennett} ({%Alvin}) {$Si Waronker} ({%Simon}), and the label's recording engineer {$Ted Keep} ({%Theodore}). Also mixed into the concept was a human in the form of {$Dave Seville}, who was bachelor father to the trio of adolescent, talking (and singing) {$Chipmunks}. Between 1958 and 1965 there were no less than ten LPs cut for {@Liberty Records} -- three of which landed in the Top 40. Generally the LPs centered on a theme, such as {^Around the World With the Chipmunks} (1960), {^Chipmunks Sing the Beatles Hits} (1964), or the pair of {^Christmas With the Chipmunks} (1962/1963) volumes -- the latter of which have never gone out of print. After the untimely passing of {$Bagdasarian} in 1972, his son {$Ross Jr.} revived the trio and it was his effort that went into compiling this release. While there are numerous budget best-ofs available, {$Ross Jr.} wisely chose tunes that were not on a majority of those. The Top 40 hits {&"Ragtime Cowboy Joe,"} {&"Alvin's Harmonica,"} {&"Alvin's Orchestra,"} and the aforementioned {&"Witch Doctor"} -- which was re-recorded with the {$Chipmunks} -- are included. Other key entries are {&"Alvin for President,"} issued to coincide with the 1960 elections. The final track is a mock interview between the character of {%Alvin} and {$Ross Bagdasarian Jr.}, who has been doing the voices since the late '70s. The 12-page liner booklet contains notes by {$ Bagdasarian Jr.} from a book that he is writing about the whole {$Chipmunk} experience. The only thing lacking would be sides from {^Chipmunks a Go-Go} (1965) with covers of {$Bob Dylan} ({&"Mr. Tambourine Man"}), {$the Beach Boys} ({&"California Girls"}), and even {$George Jones} ({&"Race Is On"}). ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide

This mid-priced title draws upon the two volumes of {^Christmas With the Chipmunks}, which were issued in the early '60s and quickly became seasonal traditions for kids of all ages, although in the wake of {$Beatlemania} many thought that {$the Chipmunks} were a clever rodent-related rip on {$the Fab Four}. In reality, the name was actually suggested by the children of the multimedia mastermind {$Ross Bagdasarian}. In fact, the moniker dated back to his 1958 hit {\novelty} platter, {&"Witch Doctor."} Although fictitious, the names of the primary characters, {%Alvin}, {%Simon}, and {%Theodore}, were a nod to {@Liberty Records} higher-ups {$Al Bennett} ({%Alvin}) and {$Si Warnoker} ({%Simon}) as well as the label's sound engineer, {$Ted Keep} ({%Theodore}). These three typical adolescent vermin were cared for by the bachelor/father human personality named {%Dave Seville}. The concept even spawned a weekly prime time animated television program called {#The Alvin Show}, which aired from October 14, 1961, through September 12, 1962, on {@CBS-TV}. In terms of musicality, the vari-speed manipulated recording may seem a tad trite (or exceedingly nerve-grating) to modern listeners. However, what better way to introduce the joys of {\traditional} {\holiday} music than with an infectiously funny and at times simply silly trio of highly identifiable icons, who are also a child's emotional and psychological peers. A cursory glance at the track listing reveals a host of familiar favorites such as {&"Deck the Halls,"} {&"Up on the House-Top,"} {&"Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,"} {&"All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth),"} and {$Bagdasarian}'s {&"Wonderful Day,"} as well as two versions of the one that started it all, {&"The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)"} -- the original 1958 rendition and a 1968 remake featuring an incipient incarnation of the {\R&B} rockers {$Canned Heat}. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide

Part actor, part songwriter, and 100 percent ingenious, {$Bagdasarian} created an empire around a trio of characters that he named after his concurrent bosses at the {@Liberty Records} label: {$Al Bennett} ({%Alvin}), {$Si Waronker} ({%Simon}), and the staff recording engineer/producer {$Ted Keep} ({%Theodore}). After scoring a chart-topper with {&"Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late),"} {$Bagdasarian} -- who provided all the voices -- began issuing thematic {\novelty} LPs such as {^Around the World With the Chipmunks} (1960) and the {^Chipmunks Sing the Beatles Hits} (1964). In fact, the latter title was done with the full cooperation and blessing of the Fab Four, who were enthusiasts of the concept. These tracks were gleaned from the first seven non-seasonal long players issued between 1959 and 1965, with three of the selections coming from the hard-to-find {^Chipmunks Sing With Children} (1965) album. Otherwise, the Top 40 hits {&"Ragtime Cowboy Joe,"} {&"Alvin's Harmonica,"} {&"Alvin's Orchestra,"} and {&"Witch Doctor"} are included, as well as {&"She Loves You"} from the aforementioned {^Chipmunks Sing the Beatles Hits} (1964). With a number of compilations from these critters available, {^The Very Best of the Chipmunks} is a good place to start, although collectors will probably want to locate {^Greatest Hits: Still Squeaky After All These Years} (1999) and {^Greatest Hits} (1992) for the one-off platters not contained on the other titles.
