Aviso'Hara

Originally known as Aviso, but forced to lengthen their name when they found out that another band had trademarked it, Aviso'hara enjoys being enigmatic. Their name, which has an apostrophe plopped in the middle of it just to confuse everyone, is a mixture of Spanish and Japanese and means something close to "notice the horizon." The band has been grinding out equally enigmatic music since their formation in New Brunswick, NJ when singer/guitarist Ralph Nicastro and guitarist Walter Greene dissolved the South Jersey band, Tow and hooked up with bassist Dave Urbano who had been a member of the prog rock New Brunswick band, Mr. Thumb. After a lot of bad luck with drummers, Aviso'hara eventually landed a live one with Benny Rodriguez, formerly of Five Star Honor. With a sound that is equal parts noisy, punky power and chaotic sheets of noise, Aviso'hara is not known for their precision. However, their live performances and their albums show a band that it best when it is standing on the edge of losing control. After releasing two 7" cds in 1996 and 1997, Aviso'hara presented a more complete picture of their work with their first full-length with Vital Cog Records, 1999's Goodnight, Sweetheart. The follow-up Made from Scratch arrived late the following year. ~ Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide
