It's common knowledge among {\punk} and {\hardcore} fans that the mighty {$Bad Brains} were one of the greatest live acts of all time. But unless you were lucky enough to have witnessed the original lineup during the '80s, you were in danger of having missed the legend. {$Bad Brains} performances after the late '80s were hit-or-miss affairs (due in large part to their unpredictable singer, {$H.R.}). Now, there is finally proof that backs up the aforementioned claim -- the fantastic 2006 DVD {=Live: CBGB 1982}. During the holiday season of 1982, {$the Bad Brains} performed a trio of shows (supported by the likes of {$Minor Threat} and the pre-{$Beastie Boys} band {$the Young and the Useless}) at their home away from home, {~CBGB's}. The shows were wild and widely praised as among the finest the group ever did. Compiling standout performances from the three shows, {=Live: CBGB 1982} presents a faithful snapshot of the pandemonium of a {\hardcore punk} show from around this time -- slam dancers often storm the stage and scream lyrics into the mike. The band is at the top of its game (especially {$H.R.}), with explosively high-energy readings of the {\punk} classics {&"Big Take Over,"} {&"Right Brigade,"} {&"Banned in D.C.,"} and {&"Pay to Cum,"} as well as such {\reggae} detours as {&"King of Glory,"} {&"The Meek,"} and {&"Rally Round Jah Throne."} The camera work may be a bit jumpy -- it appears to be mostly a two-camera shoot (a stationary camera from behind the audience and a hand-held camera on-stage) -- and the cameramen hardly ever shoots bassist {$Darryl Jenifer} at all. Regardless, {=Live: CBGB 1982} makes it all the more baffling why {$the Bad Brains} are one of {\rock}'s all-time most underrated live acts -- there's simply no comparison between the quartet's performance here and the majority of performances by other {\rock} bands from this era. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Now that {$the Bad Brains}' earliest demos, circa 1979, have been dutifully documented on the {^Black Dots} collection, this EP bridges that rougher, rawer, still-developing period with the furious, ungodly might, thrust, attack, and onslaught of their 1980-1983 period, the hottest {\hardcore} ever. What's found here is the pioneering band's first excursion into a proper 24-track studio. The sound quality is much clearer than the real document of the truly "bad" -- as in super-rad -- {$Bad Brains}, the following year's 1981 {^ROIR Sessions} cassette LP on the {@ROIR} label. (A must-have album later reissued on CD, {^ROIR} still boggles the brain in terms of speed, intensity, masterful playing, and tight precision. Get it. Now.) At only five songs, {^Omega Sessions} is far too short to replace {^ROIR Sessions} as the essential dynamite, and furthermore, {^ROIR} is harder, tighter, meaner, and way more explosive. Compare the {^Omega} and {^ROIR} versions of {&"Attitude"} and it's clear that as hot as the band was in 1980, one year later they were a total knockout. Like {%Ali}, {%Ruth}, {%Jordan}, and {%Gretzky} in their primes, these four young blacks were a fireball night after night, one that stunned and amazed all who came across their unmatched, primal fury-like genius. However, for the sound quality and the definitive versions of two later favorites (both of which are perhaps twice as good here, in their original forms), the more breakneck {\punk}, less {\hard rock} {&"I Against I"} and a {$Ric Ocasek}-freed {&"At the Movies,"} plus a tougher {&"Stay Close to Me"} (for those who recall the politer version on the 1980 debut {&"Pay to Cum"} 7" B-side), {^Omega} is still a handsome addition to the {$Bad Brains} canon, a historical piece of the foursome that founded thrash and blew away all their marginal imitators. Turn this sucker up when you play it, loud (!), and then tape it for anyone who's never heard {\hardcore} as only these four people could play it. ~ Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover, All Music Guide

{^I Against I} was for {$Bad Brains} what {^London Calling} was for {$the Clash} -- the band's first fully mature work, one which successfully brought together all of its diverse influences while at the same time showcasing a singular vision. Also like {^London Calling}, it was to be the band's masterpiece, in the original sense of that term -- a creative pinnacle which they would not reach again. The album opens with the title track, a blistering and musically exhilarating deploration of violence, and then moves directly into {&"House of Suffering,"} easily the most complex and yet viscerally compelling song the band ever produced. Singer {$H.R.} digs deep into his bag of voices and pulls them all out, one by one: the frightening nasal falsetto that was his signature in the band's {\hardcore} days, an almost bel canto baritone, and a declamatory speed-rap chatter that spews lyrics with the mechanical precision of a machine gun. He positively croons on the surprisingly melodic {&"Secret 77"} and {&"Let Me Help."} But his voice isn't even the best thing happening here. It's the incredibly tight, funky, and tonally rich interplay between guitarist {$Dr. Know}, bassist {$Darryl Jenifer}, and drummer {$Earl Hudson} that gives this album its deeply satisfying texture. The stop/start rhythms of {&"Secret 77"} and {&"Sacred Love,"} the gorgeous guitar hook on {&"She's Calling You,"} {$Dr. Know}'s completely counterintuitive ability to meld the raw directness of {\hardcore punk} with an almost supernatural virtuosity without sacrificing the power of either approach -- this is music-making of an order not usually seen in {\rock & roll}. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
