sare9295's Album Review for Berlin Airlift
""
An excellent album that got lost in the collapse of Handshake Records.
Berlin Airlift were one of the most entertain bands regularly touring the Boston area in the early 1980s. Rising from the ashes of Luna, which kind of rose from the ashes of Orchestra Luna as I understand it, Airlift was an arty bunch who could also rock.
I'm not an expert and I'm not an insider, but it's my sense that they probably put all of their eggs in one basket with a major label kind of deal with Handshake Records. The self-titled album was excellent, the core of their live performances for years after and I believe that many of the songs had been played live for some time before the record. Sadly, Handshake went under not long after the record was released, leaving this album buried in someone's vaults throughout the CD era.
Berlin Airlift followed this album up with a 6-song EP called "Professionally Damaged", which was also quite good. The band didn't last that long afterwards though. Rick Berlin has been involved in a number of projects since, like Rick Berlin: The Movie, the Shelley Winters Project and such.
I look forward to being able to put my worn record aside eventually and having the chance to hear the Berlin Airlift album fresh, in whatever format it's made available. It's a wonderful album that brings back a lot of memories of excellent shows all over the Boston area.
