Born in Holmes County, Mississippi, country artist Beverly Ellis was first strongly influenced by gospel music, including her father, Tommie Ellis, who spent better than three decades performing with the Mighty Soul Travelers. She began performing as a small child, often singing at her church in Durant, where she grew up. While in college, Ellis was spotted singing by the group Silk and offered an audition. Eventually, the opportunity for a solo career, and a burgeoning interest in country music, led to a record deal with Delta Disc Records, after, once again, gained notice during a public performance.
