CALVARIA
It’s Mexican Band of Heavy Metal, which was formed in the middle 1998 at the of the country’s capital. This group has had influences which go from Death Metal to classical music although mainly they’re focused on Melodic Metal. The origin of the band’s name is the latin word calvaria (skull): 1. superior piece of the armor which covers the Anat skull. 2. Vault of the skull, referring to the Calvario, hill from the surroundings of Jerusalem, whose name means the place of the many skulls. Also called Golgotha by the jews. The band’s lyrics thematic is wide, they talk about the thoughts and feelings flooding us in different stages and circumstances of our life, going from the everyday life of men and women, to the death and the mystery existing around it; in addition there’s a touch of fantasy and the intention to leave a message in the mind of the listener. Another of the subjects touched by Calvaria within it’s lyrics, is the history of old Mexico and the conquest. Calvaria had its first presentation on August 22 1998, date that marks the beginning of its career in the Mexican Metal circuit. Throughout its journey it has been part of various festivals alternating with prestigious bands like Dio, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Dokken, Gammaray, Kamelot, Angra, Joe Stump, Shaman, Cage, Lacrimas Profundere, Ángeles del Infierno, Mago de Oz, Medina Azahara, Rata Blanca y Animal, in addition of headlining numerous festivals in Mexico city and the rest of the country. Their first recording took place in a tribute to the Mexican band Luzbel, and later they participated in another album titled “Lo mejor del metal" (The best of metal). Their first solo album was recorded under the name of “Calvaria”, with Argenta records on February 2001. Numerous notes on the band have been published by important magazines, like Metal Hammer of Germany and their activities have been covered by prestigious national and international media, in addition to appearances in TV shows like Telehit’s "Garege" and channel 11’s "Sonicamente" and "Much music". The Calvaria’s stage résumé is very extensive, since they have appeared in the main national rock forums, receiving great acceptance among the public. Among the stages in which the band has set foot we find: Hard Rock Live, Salón 21, Foro Ideal, Circo volador, Rockotitlán, Cultural Roots, La Boom, Babel, La Diabla, Tianguis Cultural del Chopo, Foro Alicia, Comic's Rock Show, Salón el Rayo, Centro de convenciones de Tlatelolco, Anfiteatro de Villa Panamericana, Viva Villa, (Mexico City), Explanada del estadio La Corregidora (Querétaro), Parque Fundidora, El Huastock and La casa de Pancho Villa (Monterrey, Nuevo León), Arena Isabel and Auditorio Teopanzolco (Cuernavaca, Morelos), and many more. At the moment the group is preparing to record some of its more popular songs in an album named "Náufrago del Tiempo"; also they’re preparing to record an album with new material, the tentative title of this record is "Hijos del Sol". Calvaria, with its music, tries to contribute to the growth of the Heavy Metal scene in Mexico in order to reach the mainstream, increasing therefore the options available to the public; the aim of the group is creating an original musical culture which will transcend our borders.
