Cardboard Brains

The rock group the Cardboard Brains formed in Toronto, Canada, in 1977. Original members were keyboardist and singer John Paul Young, guitarist and singer Vincent Carlucci, bassist and singer Patrick Gregory, and drummer Mickel Keena. After a couple of years, both Gregory and Keena left the band. Drummer Dave Richardson and bassist John Thomas stepped in to fill the vacant spots in the lineup. The Cardboard Brains performed at many clubs in Toronto, polishing their act. In 1977, the group finished work on a debut offering called The White EP. Some of the tracks from the first EP are "Can Stress Kill," "Stepping Stone," "Living Inside My Head," and "I Want to Be a Yank." Two years later a sophomore recording was ready, and it seemed reasonable for the band to title it The Black EP. Shortly afterwards the members went their separate ways, after Young went off to try a solo career. Things came back together in 1981, and finally the next year a full-length debut album appeared, Live at the Edge. It proved to be a short-lived consolidation, and the band called it quits again in 1983. Young went back to his solo career, and even tried some acting, but brought the other Cardboard Brains in now and then to perform and record with him, releasing one album in 1998, John Paul and Cardboard Brains. It was re-issued in 2001. ~ Charlotte Dillon, All Music Guide
