Category Five

September 29, 1999 Nu Energy's final night at Ski Roundtop in PA Category Five was introduced to the true nature of the underground music scene. Having been to club nights before and having roots in the Baltimore underground metal and punk scene, Category Five rode with 7 other kids in a Hyundai Accent from Baltimore to PA uncertain of what the next few hours would bring. Lights, friends, new aquaintences, contacts, afterparty, drive home...the next 24 hours sped by at warp speed...finaly a speed of life he could appreciate for it's very nature. Never dull, never boring, the scene unfolded in the next months as he delved deeper into trance, jungle, breaks and house. Knowledge of styles and what was truely what, sparked his curiousity to almost an obsession...Nights at clubs like York, PA's Zodiac club, Lancaster's Liquid, Nation(Buzz) in DC, Paradox (Fever)and Sonar in Baltimore, fields on Martinsburg WV, and PA as well as house and hotel parties in 6 states fueled the need to create, to share, to give back what was so freely given to him. Bringing his punk/metal band philosophy and music knowledge along for the ride, Ian opened up a new door into the world. Believing that all styles have a place within each other, I.E. Fusion was possible and plausible. Jungle riddims with house anthemic melodies, breaks and Dark Jungle basslines, Heavy rollin Trance smashers..this was the wolrd Category Five envisoned and works his way too every day. No longer separate, no longer outside, no longer alone...Influenced by all styles of music from Classical to HipHop and Metal, Ian takes a little from every side and brings it right into his lap. The tender emotion of an Opus, The flare of hiphop, the Jump-up and Smash somethin energy of hardcore metal, the all out jamminess of rock with a patriotic flare found in dare I say it, Country. Smash in the Electronic aspect of sampling, movies, classic tunes, even TV commercials..nothing is sacred. If it effects Ian, it will come through in his music, production and DJing. Welcome to the Eye of the Hurricane. Welcome to Category Five.
