Charles-François Clément
A French composer, arranger and theorist who transposed the music of Pergolisi and was well acquainted with Forqueray, Rosa Baletti and Casanova. Clement composed works for the stage including comic operas, keyboard sonatas and cantatilles. Characteristics of Clement's sonatas include constantly moving multi-layered lines, and a cognizance of balance between violin and harpsichord. Clement also wrote essays concerning the composition of accompaniment, and, the fundamental bass explaining major and minor modes as well as obtaining melodies from the harmonic structures. In his attempt to arrange the music of other composers into suites for the harpsichord, few have surpassed Clement. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
