On August 28, 1999, {\power pop} masters {$Cheap Trick} played a special show for fans at {~Davis Park} in their hometown of Rockford, IL, to salute their 25th anniversary as a band together. The show included several musical celebrities making cameo appearances (as well as relatives of {$Cheap Trick} bandmembers) and the inclusion of {$the Rockford Symphony Orchestra String Quartet} on several tracks, while the 29-song set list dipped deep into the band's catalog -- including at least one song from every album of their career thus far. The evening's proceedings have been captured on the 2001 double-disc {^Silver}, the band's second live release in two years. All of the expected fan faves are included -- {&"Ain't That a Shame,"} {&"I Want You to Want Me,"} {&"Surrender,"} {&"Dream Police"} -- but longtime fans will go straight to the set's abundance of more uncommon material. Standouts include two standards of early {@MTV} ({&"If You Want My Love"} and {&"She's Tight"}), the {$Big Star} tribute {&"That 70s Song,"} the forgotten 1979 {$Beatlesque} power {\ballad} {&"Voices,"} a song that two members of {$CT} cut with {$John Lennon} back in 1980 ({&"I'm Losin' You"}), the jamfest {&"Gonna Raise Hell,"} plus tracks sung by other members -- {&"World's Greatest Lover"} ({$Rick Nielsen}) and {&"I Know What I Want"} ({$Tom Petersson}). Also featured are guest appearances by big-name fans {$Billy Corgan} ({&"Just Got Back"}), {$Slash} ({&"You're All Talk"}), and {$Art Alexakis} ({&"Day Tripper"}). Although it lacks the punch of their 1979 classic {^At Budokan} (widely regarded as one of the greatest live {\rock} albums of all time), {^Silver} shows that the band is still having fun on stage 25 years later. Japan has always had a special place in their heart for Cheap Trick. As we all know, it was Japan that gave the rocking Rockford quartet their first break (captured on 1979's extraordinary live set, {^At Budokan}), and in 2003, the band returned to their adopted homeland once more, which serves as the basis for the DVD release, �From Tokyo To You.' Mixing interview segments and live performances, the DVD is a fine document of �the State of Cheap Trick 2003.' More than a quarter century after their first album was released, few veteran rock bands can go out there, play like they still mean it, and not be a parody of themselves - and Cheap Trick is certainly one of the few exceptions (further proof - how many other still-existing bands of that era don't have to rely on extra-added side musicians and backing tapes?). The DVD's track list does a solid job of balancing classics ("Dream Police," "Surrender"), oft-overlooked gems ("Fan Club," "Big Eyes," and a fine acoustic reading of "Lookout"), and more recent fare ("Scent of a Woman," "Pop Drone," "Special One"). Complaints are few, but they would have to include that no full length songs are included (most are inter-cut with dialogue, and begin mid-way through), and that a rediscovered crowd pleaser of the last few years, "He's A Whore," is not included. Also featured are a few �bonus' features, the best of the bunch being a spot where three of the four talk about each song performed on the DVD. Although not the finest Cheap Trick DVD release (I'd put my money on 2002's {^Music for Hangovers}), �From Tokyo To You' is still highly recommended. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Since both fans and critics agree on what {$Cheap Trick}'s core canon is, from the first three albums to the highlights that follow, it seems like it would be a fairly easy job to assemble a good overview of the band. History has proven that theory wrong several times. 1991's {^Greatest Hits} largely ignored the first three albums, the 1996 box set {^Sex, America, Cheap Trick} was a rarities-filled extravaganza pitched at the converted, and while 2000's {^Authorized Greatest Hits} was a notable improvement on the first compilation, it had some puzzling inclusions, including substituting original single versions for alternate takes and live cuts. So, there was a need for a new collection, one that got it right. Enter {^Essential Cheap Trick}, the band's installment of {@Sony/Legacy}'s largely excellent {#Essential} series. Spanning two discs and 36 tracks, it is the most generous hits collection yet assembled, but it still falls short of being a definitive overview. Again, there is a considerable problem of substituting alternate versions for the original studio versions; it is toned down from {^Authorized Greatest Hits}, but when the fourth song in is a live version of {&"Mandocello"} from 1998, with guest guitarist {$Billy Corgan}, the momentum is knocked off-track immediately. Then, the song selection is a little idiosyncratic, which is often the case with artist-selected compilations, which {^Essential Cheap Trick} is. While the classic first three albums are represented well -- indeed, the entire first disc is devoted to '70s material (well, there are the two live tracks from 1998, but they're of '70s songs) -- some fans will inevitably find a favorite or two missing, including {&"Oh, Candy,"} {&"Oh Caroline,"} {&"On Top of the World,"} and {&"How Are You?"} The real problem is that the collection loses steam on the second disc, which covers the '80s and '90s. The band has chosen to bypass several charting singles for album tracks, which may frustrate some chart-bound listeners, but it does make for a disc that's  stronger overall. Still, it's hard to deny that the material on the second disc is simply not as good as that on the first, which makes this collection a bit too lopsided to be consistently enjoyable. Nevertheless, that first disc makes for very good listening (apart from the '98 tracks, that is) and, overall, it gives a good sense of the band's history, even if any of the first three albums and {^Live at Budokan} remain the best introductions to the band. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

There are two kinds of {$Cheap Trick} diehards -- the ones that love everything the band ever did and the ones that love just the first three albums, plus {&"Dream Police."} There are a lot of the latter -- so much so, they were the target audience for the band's series of concerts at {~the Metro} in Chicago, where they ran through {^Cheap Trick}, {^In Color}, and {^Heaven Tonight}, plus {^At Buddokahn}, over the course of four nights. It was a treat for those diehards, but it's kind of diluted in its audio and video presentation, since they decided to cull highlights instead of present the concerts in full (which is a good idea, since few people would buy four-disc boxes of new live albums). The featured selections are pretty good, but they're just slightly skewed away from the basic canon -- {&"Surrender,"} {&"I Want You to Want Me,"} {&"Taxman, Mr. Thief,"} {&"Mandocello,"} and {&"How Are You?"} are all here, but there are no {&"He's a Whore,"} no {&"Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School,"} no {&"Southern Girls,"} no {&"On the Radio."} And that kind of complaint is the kind that's born from years of obsessing over records, never knowing what the band actually played in concert, since those 45-minute platters still seem vibrant and alive, decades later. So, even those that love the records may find it surprising that {$Cheap Trick} never played {&"Gonna Raise Hell"} until these concerts -- a revelation revealed on the commentary track on this DVD. The commentary is lively and entertaining, but it has a major flaw. Billed as a "{#Mystery Science Theater 3000}"-styled commentary, the boys' silhouettes don't move -- they just sit there, motionless, since they're not the shadows of {$Bun E}, {$Robin}, {$Rick}, and {$Tom}, they're just an artist rendering. It's a dumb-ass idea made all the more frustrating because you can't hear the commentary without this visual. And, really, this, plus the bonus five-minute interview, is the reason to pick up the DVD if you're a fan. Sure, the performances are good, but if you love the three albums, that's what you're going to want to hear when you want to hear these songs -- but if you're looking to dig a little deeper, to get a sense of the songs, or at least the band, this commentary is essential. {$Cheap Trick} has been through it all: from barrooms to {~Budokan} to barbecues to this birthday bash. And what a fiesta: the boys blow through their career catalogue, hitting the numerous high points of their 25 years as a group and nailing each crowing achievement with the precision and confidence that could only come from rockin' the house together night after night. Several guests -- some famous and some family -- show up, but the true stars are, obviously: {$Rick Nielsen}, {$Robin Zander}, {$Tom Petersson}, and {$Bun E. Carlos}. {$Cheap Trick} is the brainstorm of colorful guitarist {$Nielsen}, who is one of the most memorable wise-acres ever in {\rock}, but on this night, the Master of Ceremonies diplomatically steps aside (except for wartime valentine {&"World's Greatest Lover"} and the spellbinding train wreck {&"Gonna Raise Hell"}) and lets his cohorts shine throughout the mammoth 29-song show. One of the greatest, but unsung, voices in {\rock}, {$Robin Zander}'s singing never needs support. His tone hardened with age, but never lost an ounce of power and still sets the standard against which all {\pop} voices are measured. In fact, here he delivers the best version of {&"Voices"} ever. Midway through the set, {$Zander} proclaims he's sung enough {\ballads} and intently begins belting out the rocky stuff. Whether snarling the incomprehensive lyrics of {&"You're All Talk "} (while playing a mean set of maracas) or crooning {&"Time Will Let You Know"} with his daughter, {$Robin}, he inadvertently blows away whoever is on-stage with him. (A long-lost live version of {&"Johnny Be Good"} reveals {$Zander} could even out-scream {$Bon Scott}.) Meanwhile, {$Petersson}'s full-bodied 12-string lays the bedrock for {$Nielson}'s flailing hot licks and {$Carlos}' wavering big beat. {$Petersson}'s turn at the mic on the immortal throwaway {&"I Know What I Want"} is always a pleasure, even though {$Nielsen} has tortured his once-delicious solo beyond recognition. And in the end, as in the beginning, it all comes back to {$Carlos} and the {&"Tusk"}-like chant {&"Who D' King."} Odd-man-out {$Jon Brant} shows up in some kooky headgear, working it on a couple of '80s killers he worked on. Shout-along should-have-beens like {&"She's Tight"} and {&"Never Had a Lot to Lose"} sound good, oh so good. The poignant {\pop} perfection of {&"Oh Candy"} and {&"Tonight It's You"} still resonates decades later. Like most great bands, {$Cheap Trick} possesses two personalities, one in the studio and the other under the spotlight. In the mid-'90s, when {$Cheap Trick} returned to the club circuit, the band didn't bring a keyboard player and each song benefited highly from the bare-bones {^Live at Leeds} powerhouse delivery that first broke the quartet back in the '70s. Such is the case with the opening numbers here, but the deadly keys of fifth member {$Tod Howarth} soon crash into the set. Luckily, his big-'80s chimes perfectly fit the wonderfully ridiculous {&"Can't Stop Falling into Love"} and {$the Rockford Symphony} orchestration accompanying grand opuses like {&"Stop This Game"} and {&"World's Greatest Lover"} finally frames those works as the masterpieces they are. {=Silver} signals the end of an era for one of the greatest live bands and one of the greatest {\rock} bands in history.
