Claudio Pari
This native born Burgundian, a reference used in the title pages of all his compositions, was an important madrigalist working in Sicily. He was prone to composing cyclical madrigals for five and six parts. The second book, "Il pastor fido," includes only texts by Guarini indicative of Pari's thematic, cyclical penchant. The volume entitled "Il lamento d'Arianna" has twelve of the twenty madrigals devoted to this text. Characteristically this body of madrigals employs only a few rhythms and melodic aspects with a number of overlapping lines and motifs caused by extensive imitation. "Ariana" also includes few cadences intentionally omitted by Pari so that he might use new dissonances for the purpose of displacing what would otherwise have been an extended monotony. Because of Pari's experimentation with diverse styles including imitation, counterpoint, sensitivity to words, and harmonies, in combination with his well-developed cycles, he is considered one of the best of the Sicilian composers of madrigals. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
