Connolly & Len Obrien
The trio of Tipperary accordionist Paddy O'Brien, fiddler Seamus Connolly, and pianist Charlie Lennon joined forces in 1973 to record The Banks of the Shannon, a landmark date in the history of traditional Irish music. O'Brien was perhaps the best known individually -- a series of 78 rpm discs he recorded in 1954 spotlighted his unique style of buttonbox playing, a massively influential technique which allowed him to transfer the full range of traditional fiddle performance onto the accordion. Frequent collaborator Connolly, meanwhile, was a virtuoso performer who won countless fiddle competitions in addition to his stint teaching Irish music at Boston College. Green Linnet's reissue of the Banks of the Shannon not only includes material from the original session but also five of O'Brien's 1954 sides in addition to latter-day recordings from Connolly. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
