A possible student of Pachelbel's eldest son, Cornelius played the organ and was also a composer and musicographer. Dretzel was appointed at Frauenkirche and studied with J. S. Bach in Weimar. Keyboard counterpoints and fugues were his forte having thoroughly emersed himself in the works of Bach. Dretzel's own "Harmonische Ergotzung" was long thought to be composed by Bach. His own "divertimenti" were thought to be lost until they were found in a collection that had belonged to Haydn. Dretzel's collection and commentary "Des evangelishen Zions musicalische Harmonie" contained over 900 melodies, suspended over a continuous bass, some of which had not appeared in print until this time. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
