Da Preachaman

I was destined to serve God! From the very beginning, He put me in a time and place in which I would be needy and so would seek to fill that empty place. I was born Al Deshion Nezy on October 21, 1972 in Compton, California. It was just my Mom and I in a bad neighborhood with a lot of odds against us. I was left with a number of sitters while my Mom worked to pay the bills. It was in these different homes at a very young age when I was exposed to gangs and unspeakable abuse. At age 11, my Mom and I moved to Beaumont, Texas to take care of my ailing Grandma and there we stayed. By God’s grace I was able to get through school without getting into too much trouble. I graduated in 1990 with only a second grade reading level but thought I had it going on because a friend and I had been recruited to an aeronautics school. My wake- up call came when I couldn’t keep up with the class due to my poor reading and math skills. I dropped out and that’s when the real trouble began. I was working but I was also spending a lot of time on the streets. I felt low so I associated with the lowly. I got into the street music and rapped about girls, alcohol, drugs, and violence, all the things that had become my life. As God has done for so many others, when I was at my lowest, he reached out to me. I was working at a rice mill when I heard his voice. He called my name and asked me where I was going when I died. I had never killed anyone and really never intended to hurt anyone and sometimes I attended church with my Mom so I was pretty sure I knew. But after the third time God asked me the same question, my life with all my sins flashed before me. I then knew where I was going and I wanted something better. I remembered a friend who had just been released from prison and had spouted off about being saved so I found him and asked what I needed to do. He didn’t give me a long list or lecture. He just told me to go read the Bible. So I did that very night and difficulties seemed to disappear as God revealed to me through His Word all I needed to know. That night I prayed and when I finished I knew where I was going and I liked it. With my soul full of the Spirit I sought out a church the very next Sunday. I cleaned up my act and threw out all the sinful, worldly things in my life including my rapping. The one thing that I miss was the music. The desire to rap was still there so I went to the Lord and asked Him why I still had such a strong desire for something of the world. He answered me and told me to do it for His glory and His kingdom. I immediately started writing Christian rap and everything I write is from the Holy Spirit. I wanted so much to serve God and tell everyone what they were missing if they didn’t have a relationship with Christ so in 1994 I went to Rhema Bible Training Center. There were obstacles like the tuition and my lack of basic education but with Him anything is possible. He provided the money and even though up to that point I couldn’t read the instructions to the “Hooked on Phonics” game, He blessed me with the wisdom I needed to excel in my ministry studies. It was at Rhema that I met my wife, a beauty from Arizona named Mariendia. I graduated from Rhema in 1996 and in 1997 Rennie, as I lovingly call her, graduated. We move to Arizona and married the same year. Rennie and I both wanted to minister and the reservation was where we felt called. Our home in Page, Arizona was the perfect base from which to spread God’s Word. After a few years we decided to settle in, find a home church and add to our family. We now have two fantastic sons, Rayshion and Jayden. We’ve stayed busy in our church teaching Sunday school, helping with the youth and participating on their praise and worship team and finally with the Sunday worship team. Now I feel the Spirit moving in me to take my music a step further. I know God is working through the music He gives me, especially when I see the evidence of people not only laying their drugs on the alter but their entire lives being changed. I feel like my music is gift-wrapping that God has given me so He can use me to offer His Gift of Salvation to people who might not otherwise be open to it. With that kind of blessing, that kind of responsibility I want to take His package out to the entire world. I am willing so if it’s in His perfect will…. It will be done!
