DAVE GOODMAN BIO Born in Tamworth, NSW, Australia in 1977, Dave Goodman began playing organ at the age of seven. After playing for some years he also began playing trumpet until he began playing drumset on 7th March 1989. He then went on to perform regularly with the Tamworth Regional Music Centre Big Band under the direction of ex-Sydney trombonist Peter Horton as well as with the Tamworth Regional Youth Orchestra under the baton of Derek Taylor, OBE. In 1994 Dave attended the Pan Pacific Jazz and Big Band Camp directed in Sydney by John Morrison, at which he received a return scholarship for the following year's camp. Dave moved to Sydney in January 1995 to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours, and, in early 1996 at the age of eighteen, he began working with the Mike Nock Quartet. Since winning second place in the National Jazz Awards in 1997, Dave has played music with a diverse range of artists, including visiting U.S. artists Bob Berg, James Williams, Paul Bollenback, Daryl Grant, John Sneider, Bruce Paulson, Chris McNulty, and Phillip Johnston, as well as local icons James Morrison, Don Burrows, Bernie McGann, Deni Hines, Billy Field, Roger Frampton, Greg Page, Geoff Harvey, Bob Barnard, Judy Bailey, Matt McMahon, Dale Barlow, Sean Wayland, Hamish Stuart, Sandy Evans, Carl Dewhurst, Mark Isaacs, James Muller, Shelley Scown and Mark Trevorrow. In addition to having toured extensively throughout Australia, Dave substituted for the great John Pochée in Pochée's own band Ten Part Invention in 1998 for an extensive tour of Asia, performing in Taiwan, The Philippines, China and Singapore at the Beijing International Jazz Festival, and the All The Best From Australia Festival (Manila) and again in 2006 for the band's 20th anniversary celebrations. In a commercial setting, Dave played a one-year season on national television in Fish Shack, the house band for ABC TV's O'Loghlin on Saturday Night, which backed James Reyne, Jimmy Little, Richard Clapton, Joe Camilleri, Melanie Oxley, Stephen Cummings, Tim Rogers (You Am I), Matt Moffett, Lily Dior, Emma Pask, Craig McLaughlin, Martin Plaza (Mental As Anything), Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus), Vince Jones, Jackie Orsaczky as well as Johnnie Johnson, Thelma Houston & Venetta Fields from the USA, and Glen Tilbrook (UK Squeeze) from the UK. He has recorded jingles for KFC, Uncle Toby's, Paddle Pop, Cadbury, Mercedes Benz, Bonds, Mastercard, Flexi-Rent, Glue Store and Volvo, and has appeared in three documentaries, namely, Dr Jazz (as a soloist in the Mike Nock Quartet), Bodgie Dada - Australian Jazz on Television (with the Mike Nock Quartet), and The Pulse (once with Theak-tet and once with the Mark Isaacs Trio). Dave has held faculty positions at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Australian Institute of Music teaching drumset, and appeared as a clinician for the Music Link sponsored Rhythmfest '99. He has also been on the faculty for Pan Pacific Music Camps, Jazz Connection Camps and the Armidale Jazz Camp. Dave played with Latin ensemble Tigramuna for the Musica Viva In Schools program during 2003 and 2004, and has served as project manager for the Music Council of Australia's Music Play For Life campaign. Dave studied in the United States of America with the legendary Joe Morello and Jim Chapin, partially funded by a generous grant received from the Australia Council for the Arts. Whilst in the U.S., Dave also studied with the great Billy Hart, subbing for Hart at the last minute in a band comprised of jazz luminaries Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner and Cecil McBee. In addition to maintaining a busy live performance and recording schedule in Sydney and around Australia, recent artists are as varied as Matt Keegan Trio, James Morrison, Asli, Steve McKenna Quartet, V8, Mark Isaacs, Gerard Masters Trio, Dale Barlow Group, Gest8, Cameron Undy Quartet, Sean Coffin Quintet, Mike Rivett Quartet, and Inga Liljeström, Dave composes for and leads his own projects, performing for SIMA and the Jazzgroove Association. In 2002 Dave was commissioned by the late, great co-producer/engineer Neale Sandbache to record several original compositions for Jim McLeod's Jazztrack radio program on ABC Classic FM. He was also awarded third place in the 2004 National Jazz Awards. Dave Goodman plays Sonor drums, Zildjian cymbals and Evans drumheads.
