David Burns

David Burns deserves much credit for his efforts both playing and promoting indie rock music since the '90s. He has been not only a drummer and instigator of various band activities, but a record company manager as well. His artwork and designs often adorn the covers of releases from his bands. Burns' activities have taken place in several regions of the United States, directly enriching cities such as Little Rock, Knoxville, Chicago, and Philadelphia with his activities in bands such as Atombombpocketknife and Thumbnail. The File 13 label, with a catalog of great interest to listeners following the development of various regional rock scenes, began in Little Rock circa 1989 as a collective operation launched by Burns. The label changed its base to Philadelphia in 1996. Transplants such as this are typical in the laboratory of Burns' music from both the standpoints of art and commerce. Key dates in the log often involve some kind of decision arrived at in collaboration with Justin Sinkovich. The latter guitarist and rock band vocal frontman was one of the original founders of Atombombpocketknife, back in the days when the propriety of typesetting held more sway and the band's name was written as Atom Bomb Pocket Knife. It was 1994 and the group was basically just a side project for Sinkovich and various other Knoxville musicians -- Burns had yet to come into the picture. This group turned out to possess both the after-life and practicality suggested by its name. Burns was officially out in 1999, replaced by Matt Espy; meanwhile Burns had also been simultaneously involved with the Chicago-based Thumbnail band, whose recordings were eventually reissued on CD by Cargo/Headhunter. To no surprise, Sinkovich was also part of Thumbnail, and when this band was clipped for the last time the partners simply went and reunited the Atombombpocketknife group. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
