DeeJay Punk-Roc

DeeJay Punk-Roc was born in Brooklyn, NY, back in 1971. The youngest of six children, Punk-Roc cut his teeth on the funky sounds of such 1970s and '80s stars as Parliament, Barry White, the Isley Brothers, Sugar Hill Gang, and Grandmaster Flash; he also began DJing at parties. A troubled teen, he dropped out of high school at 16 years of age, but soon enlisted in the United States Military to put his life back on track. Being stationed in Japan, Germany, and England helped broaden Punk-Roc's mind, and it was after his stint with the military that a friend turned him onto the wonders of writing and recording music. After DJing at a series of parties in a neighborhood school park, he recorded the original track "My Beatbox" for Airdog Recordings (Punk-Roc's U.K. label). His debut full-length, ChickenEye, was released in Britain in mid-1998, and picked up for U.S. distribution through Epic by autumn; it was praised as "the OK Computer you can breakdance to" by Vox magazine. The mix album Anarchy in the USA followed in 1999. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
